India: Maulana kalim siddiqui has been sentenced to life imprisonment by NIA ATS court
The rise of oppression and discrimination against Muslims in India
On Wednesday 11 sept, a special NIA-Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) court in Uttar Pradesh sentenced 12 people, including Islamic preacher Maulana Kalim Siddiqui and Mohammed Umar Gautam, founder of the Islamic Da’wah Centre, to life imprisonment. The ruling was issued by Special Judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi. Additionally, four other defendants received 10-year prison sentences.
According to the police, the convicted individuals were involved in a scheme to convert individuals to Islam in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly with foreign funding. Maulana Kalim Siddiqui is the head of the Shah Waliullah Trust in Muzaffarnagar and the chairman of the Global Peace Foundation.

"In India, there has been a rise in atrocities and discriminatory behavior against minorities, particularly Muslims, under government patronage."
The increase in oppression and discriminatory attitudes towards minorities, especially Muslims, in India has become a matter of deep concern. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government came into power under the leadership of Narendra Modi in 2014, there has been a noticeable rise in discrimination against Muslims and other minority groups. Many experts and human rights organizations suggest that the government's policies and rhetoric have fueled Hindu nationalism, resulting in increased hate speech and violence against Muslims.
Some significant events during this period include:
1. Violence in the name of cow protection: During Modi's tenure, laws protecting cows were tightened, which were used against Muslims. Many Muslim individuals were lynched by mobs on suspicion of slaughtering cows or possessing beef.
2. Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA): The Citizenship Amendment Act was introduced in 2019, which did not grant citizenship rights to Muslims in the same way as to other minorities. This law sparked large-scale protests across the country.
3.Hate speeches and biased media reporting: Political leaders often make inflammatory statements against Muslims, and some media channels portray Muslims as extremists or anti-nationals.
4. Attacks on mosques and religious sites: There have also been reports of attacks on Muslim places of worship, and the lack of adequate action by the government has caused fear and insecurity among the minorities.
5. Assaults on religious identity: In some states, Muslim practices related to clothing, food, and religious teachings have been targeted. In recent years, actions such as banning the hijab, scrutinizing madrasas, and discrimination against the Urdu language have also been observed.
These factors are contributing to increasing sectarian tension in India and a growing sense of insecurity among the minorities particularly Muslims۔
