Bangladesh Polls: BNP Claims Success as Jamaat-e-Islami Voices Concerns
Tarique Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced that it secured a majority in Thursday’s landmark general election and is set to form the next government.
Jamaat-e-Islami, however, has not conceded defeat, stating that it is “not satisfied” with the vote count and raising “serious concerns regarding the integrity of the results process.”
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Pakistani leaders Asif Ali Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif, extended congratulations to Rahman, characterising his victory as “decisive” and “resounding.”
According to Jamuna TV, citing provisional figures, the BNP and its allies won 211 out of 299 constituency seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance secured 70 seats.
The Bangladesh Election Commission has yet to officially declare the final results.
A referendum was also conducted alongside the election, addressing proposed political reforms such as introducing term limits for the prime minister, strengthening checks on executive authority, and implementing safeguards to prevent excessive concentration of parliamentary power.
