Portugal's Ronaldo Becomes First Player to Score in Six World Cups

Portugal's forward Cristiano Ronaldo (centre) celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the 2026 World Cup Group K football match between Portugal and Uzbekistan at the Houston Stadium in Houston, June 23, 2026.

Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name into football history on Tuesday in Houston by becoming the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, finding the net against Uzbekistan.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain ended a lengthy goal drought in major international competitions by scoring from close range just six minutes into the match, achieving a milestone unmatched in World Cup history.

The achievement highlights Ronaldo’s remarkable longevity. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star scored his first World Cup goal back in 2006 against Iran and has continued to perform at the highest level ever since.

Ronaldo had faced criticism following Portugal’s underwhelming 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening World Cup fixture in North America, where he struggled to make an impact.

Before the match against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo had gone 10 consecutive appearances in major international tournaments without scoring, registering only one assist during that period.

His lack of goals had drawn comparisons with fellow football stars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane, all of whom have maintained strong scoring records in recent years.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal in 2003. Now playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, he enjoyed another prolific domestic season, scoring 28 goals in 30 league matches.

He nearly opened the scoring after just three minutes in Houston, arriving at the far post to meet a cross from Nuno Mendes but narrowly missing contact.

Ronaldo’s frustration was evident as he struck the turf in disappointment, but only moments later he found the breakthrough, turning frustration into a historic achievement.
