Hamas open to ceasefire talks as Israeli strikes kill 29 in Gaza
At least 29 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza, according to hospital sources cited by Al Jazeera, as Israeli forces once again targeted civilians waiting for food. Hospitals are overwhelmed and struggling to treat the growing number of wounded.
Hamas has expressed readiness to begin negotiations "immediately" on a proposed 60-day ceasefire, aimed at facilitating urgently needed humanitarian aid for Gaza.
Islamic Jihad, a close ally of Hamas, also voiced support for the truce talks but stressed the need for “guarantees” that the negotiations would lead to a permanent ceasefire. The announcement follows internal consultations among Palestinian factions.
It comes ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington on Monday, where U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for an end to the conflict, now entering its 21st month.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the ongoing Israeli offensive has killed at least 57,268 people and injured 135,625 others. In the October 7, 2023 attacks, around 1,139 people were killed in Israel, and more than 200 were taken hostage.
