Myanmar's junta announces the release of 5,864 prisoners under an amnesty

Myanmar's military government announced plans to release 5,864 prisoners, including 180 foreign nationals, as part of an amnesty to commemorate the nation’s independence day, state media reported on Saturday.

The country has been in chaos since early 2021, when the military toppled an elected civilian government and cracked down on pro-democracy protests, triggering a nationwide armed resistance.

Although the junta has pledged to hold elections this year, opposition groups have widely dismissed the plan as a facade.
