North Korea Fires Multiple Short-Range Ballistic Missiles into the Sea
South Korea Reports North Korea’s Launch of Multiple Ballistic Missiles in Show of Military Strength
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan) around 7:30 a.m. local time Tuesday (22:30 GMT).
Initially detecting a single missile, the JCS later confirmed multiple projectiles fired from the Sariwon area, approximately 400 km (248 miles) from the launch point. The Japanese government also confirmed the launch, with a projectile landing outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
In recent comments, South Korea’s Minister of National Defence, Kim Yong-hyun, suggested North Korea may increase military activities around the upcoming U.S. presidential election to capture Washington's attention and project a stronger presence.
