Fishing Boat Sinks Off South Korea, Leaving 2 Dead and 12 Missing
At least two people have died, and 12 remain missing after a fishing boat capsized off South Korea’s coast, according to coastguard officials. The 120-ton Geumseong sank approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles) from Jeju Island after departing from Seogwipo Port to fish for mackerel late Thursday, as reported by the Korea Coast Guard on Friday.
The crew included 16 South Koreans and 11 foreign nationals, with two foreigners still unaccounted for. The coastguard received a distress signal around 4:30 a.m. on Friday from a nearby vessel that responded to assist.
According to crew statements, the boat suddenly capsized and began sinking while they were transferring their catch to another ship. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has ordered the deployment of all available resources and personnel for rescue efforts, according to his office.
