Days after the Ujjain rape incident, Madhya Pradesh Police arrested a man accused of recording the rape of a woman on a busy footpath in Ujjain district, officials announced on Saturday.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Salim, an autorickshaw driver, was detained on Saturday, according to police officials. Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma stated that teams from the district police, cyber cell, and social media monitoring units were quickly deployed to trace the individual responsible for recording and circulating the video online.
Within hours, the teams were able to identify the man who filmed the incident. He was found to have a prior criminal record," said Sharma. Salim is currently being questioned, and his mobile phone is under investigation for additional evidence. He has been charged under Sections 72, 77, and 294 of the BNS, Section 67 of the IT Act, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act for disclosing the identity of the victim and capturing inappropriate footage.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at Koyla Phatak, a busy intersection in Ujjain, where several bystanders witnessed the assault but failed to intervene, according to the police.
In her complaint, the victim identified Lokesh as the perpetrator. Lokesh, who allegedly promised to marry the woman, gave her alcohol before assaulting her, was arrested within two hours of the FIR being filed.
