Israel has launched fresh air strikes around the Lebanese city of Tyre after issuing forced displacement orders for residents of the city and nearby villages.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Israeli military claimed it was targeting Hezbollah positions in the Tyre region, shortly after warning civilians to evacuate large parts of the coastal city and surrounding areas ahead of military operations.

The evacuation order covered most of Tyre and areas south of Lebanon’s Zahrani River, which Israeli forces declared a “combat zone”. Residents were instructed to move north as Israeli attacks intensified across southern and eastern Lebanon.

The escalation comes a day after heavy Israeli bombardment reportedly killed at least 31 people and wounded dozens more across Lebanon, according to Lebanese health authorities.

Israeli strikes also targeted several towns including Braiqaa, Deir Qanoun en-Nahr, Srifa and Toura during the Eid al-Adha holiday, while Hezbollah claimed multiple retaliatory attacks against Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli ground forces were advancing deeper into southern Lebanon to establish what he described as a “security zone” near the border.
