US Misread Rooted in ‘Historical Blind Spots’ on Iran Leadership

A limited understanding of historical context led the United States to assume that Iran’s leadership could be removed with ease.

Brian Clark, director of defense concepts at the Washington, DC based Hudson Institute think tank, shared further insights in a conversation with Al Jazeera’s Diplomatic Editor James Bays regarding the war involving Iran.

Clark noted that Donald Trump has long held strong opposition toward Iran’s leadership, suggesting that the president appeared to be seeking a “legacy move” aimed at fundamentally reshaping Iran into, at minimum, a neutral state if not one more aligned with US interests.

“This is not a new objective for the president,” Clark explained.

He added that both US and Israeli leadership seemed to view this as an opportune moment to decisively pressure the Iranian regime, believing it was in a weakened position.

However, Clark cautioned that such thinking may overlook historical realities, emphasizing that Iran is not a country where the existing leadership structure can be easily overturned.
