India: Muslim youth battling for life after Hindutva mob attack in UP

Fear and outrage have gripped the Muslim community in India's Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh after a Muslim youth was brutally attacked by a Hindu mob in Barla village.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the victim, identified as Fardeen, was assaulted on August 21 by over ten men who beat him with sharp objects and hurled anti-Muslim slurs. He was left gravely injured before being rescued by passersby and rushed to a hospital, where doctors described his condition as critical.

Fardeen told the media that he was attacked solely because of his religious identity, recalling how the assailants abused him with derogatory terms like “katua,” often used as a slur against Muslims.

The incident has triggered widespread fear and anger in the area, with locals accusing the BJP government of fostering an environment where hate crimes and mob violence against Muslims have become routine. Community leaders and rights activists strongly condemned the attack and demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

Despite the seriousness of the case, police have failed to respond to media queries, drawing criticism for negligence and indifference. Rights groups warned that official inaction only emboldens assailants and deepens the sense of insecurity among minorities.

Fardeen’s family has appealed for urgent medical assistance and swift justice. The incident, they said, reflects the worsening situation of Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, where assaults driven by religious hatred are on the rise.
