An overnight Russian missile and drone barrage on Kyiv killed at least eight people, including two children, and injured dozens more, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday.

Explosions lit up the night sky and sent plumes of smoke across the capital as strikes damaged buildings in several districts. A five-storey residential block in Darnytskyi district was hit directly, leaving “everything destroyed,” according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city military administration.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed two children were among the dead, while rescue teams worked at more than 20 locations to free people trapped under rubble. Mayor Vitali Klitschko described it as a “massive attack.”

The assault was the first large-scale combined strike on Kyiv since US President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this month to discuss ending the war.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strikes “a clear response” to international calls for a ceasefire. He urged tougher sanctions, naming China and Hungary as countries Ukraine expects to react. “Russia still takes advantage of the world turning a blind eye to murdered children,” he said.

Zelenskyy stressed that Moscow continues to reject negotiations: “Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table. It chooses killing over ending the war.” His administration is set to meet US officials in New York on Friday.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry reported intercepting over 100 Ukrainian drones targeting at least seven regions overnight. Ukraine’s drone command claimed strikes hit two Russian oil refineries in Krasnodar and Samara, according to Reuters.
