Tsunami warnings issued for the US, Russia, and Japan following 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast
Tsunami warnings have been triggered following a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred 136 kilometers (84 miles) east of Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky, a coastal city in Russia’s far east.
Japan’s meteorological agency issued a tsunami advisory for much of its eastern coastline, cautioning that waves could reach up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) in height.
Tsunami alerts were also extended to Taiwan, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, along with advisories for large portions of the U.S. West Coast.
