Israel’s assault on Gaza leaves 27 dead amid rising toll from starvation
Israel’s ongoing bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip has resulted in the deaths of at least 27 Palestinians since dawn on Thursday, including several individuals seeking humanitarian aid.
In one particularly deadly incident, Israeli forces opened fire on crowds approaching the Zikim crossing where aid trucks were entering northern Gaza killing at least 51 people and injuring 648 others.
Meanwhile, Gaza's hospitals have reported seven additional deaths due to famine and malnutrition, bringing the total number of hunger related fatalities to 154 since October 2023, including 89 children.
In a related diplomatic development, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will formally recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in September, emphasizing the urgency of a two-state solution.
Since the start of the conflict, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 60,138 people and wounded 146,269 more. The Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack in Israel claimed 1,139 lives and resulted in the capture of over 200 individuals.
