Israel’s public broadcaster has reported that the government has approved the establishment of 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, near the Jordanian border.

The decision was spearheaded by Defence Minister Israel Katz and far right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

Channel 14 quoted Katz describing the move as a "strategic step" aimed at reinforcing Israel’s control over the West Bank and obstructing the creation of a Palestinian state.

Since joining the government in 2022, Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir both known for their hardline stances have aggressively pushed for settlement expansion in the West Bank, in defiance of international law.
