Amnesty accuses Israel of committing a "live-streamed genocide" in Gaza.
Amnesty accuses U.S. President Donald Trump of carrying out a "series of attacks" on human rights.
Amnesty International has accused Israel of committing a "live-streamed genocide" in Gaza, alleging that it is deliberately carrying out illegal actions aimed at eradicating the Palestinian people.
In its annual report released Monday, Amnesty stated that Israeli forces have breached the United Nations Genocide Convention by “causing serious bodily or mental harm to civilians” and by “deliberately imposing living conditions intended to lead to their physical destruction.” The organization also criticized Israel for repeatedly “denying, obstructing, and failing to allow and facilitate” humanitarian access to Gaza, and for launching an offensive in the southern city of Rafah despite international warnings including from the International Court of Justice about the catastrophic consequences for civilians.
Amnesty further reported that Israeli air strikes often targeted civilians who were complying with evacuation orders, and accused Israeli forces of “arbitrarily detaining and, in some instances, forcibly disappearing Palestinians.”
Since October 7, 2023 the day Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages "the world has become an audience to a live-streamed genocide," said Amnesty’s Secretary-General, Agnes Callamard, in the report's introduction.
“While Israel has killed thousands upon thousands of Palestinians, obliterating entire extended families, and destroying homes, livelihoods, hospitals, and schools, the international community has largely stood by, appearing powerless,” Callamard said.
She also criticized Israel and its allies, particularly the United States, for behaving as though international law did not apply to them.
Israel has firmly rejected accusations of genocide, asserting that it is acting in self-defence against Hamas and takes extensive precautions to safeguard civilians.
According to Palestinian health officials, more than 51,300 people — including at least 17,400 children have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
The Amnesty report also raised alarms about the threats to human rights worldwide, citing "unprecedented forces" such as the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Callamard described the first 100 days of Trump’s 2025 presidency as marked by “a series of assaults” on human rights accountability, international law, and the United Nations. She emphasized that these attacks are part of a longer trend and warned that "red lines don't turn green overnight."
